ну это же не достаточное условие - отсутствие свободы... похоже, даже не необходимое. Вся тут штука, что понятие интеллигенции - никому не понятное. кроме русской интеллигенции.

Это не определение, это описание. Да, мы можем извиниться, когда нам наступили на ногу. Думая, что случайно. Но когда нам наступают усиленно, мы ж и ответим.
А мне кажется, интеллигенция везде есть. Названия нет ( как с жопой), а интеллигенция вполне есть, мне встречалась. Правда леваки они в большинстве своем. Интеллектуалы, больше озабоченные интересами духовными, интеллектуальными, чем материальными, склонные задумываться о судьбах мира и прочих философских вопросах. Чем не интеллигенция? Сплошь и рядом в оппозиции к правительству, или во всяком случае имеют свою независимую точку зрения. Посмотри какие в америке тиражи Достоевского - кто-то же его читает. А кто кроме интеллигенции на это способен?
Простите, полвека уже жуют разницу между интеллектуалами и некоей непереводимой интеллигенцией. Этимология - умным рожденный? Готов получить по щщам...
Я, честно говоря, разницу не понимаю и не вижу. Разве что российская интеллигенция состоит в сложных отношениях с народом - любит, проклинает, противопоставляет, и т.д. Это и российской интеллигенции дореволюционной было присуще. А западная себя в общем-то от народа не отделяет и напряженных эмоций по этому поводу не испытывает. Собственно, это главное различие. И еще отношения с родиной не свойственны западному интеллектуалу - не с конкретным правительством, конкретной политической ситуацией, с державными амбициями, а с родиной вообще, хотя черт знает, что это такое - родина. У меня родина, если страну считать, была 1/6 часть суши и о большей ее части я вообще ничего не знаю. Но я не интеллигент, и никогда им не была, так что мои суждения возможно поверхностны. Я космополит безродный.
